Parenting Poll of the Week – Bike Helmets

When I was a kid, we didn’t wear bike helmets. No one did. I don’t even remember seeing bike helmets sold in stores. We also didn’t wear seat belts in cars. We were idiots.

Today I wear a seat belt and use a bike helmet. It never would occur to my kids that people don’t do both of these, all the time. And that’s a good thing. But there are still non-believers out there, I guess.

  1. I agree. I don’t really care for the argument “we didn’t wear helmets or seatbelts and we turned out fine.” Yes, we did, but it’s the people who AREN’T HERE TO TALK ABOUT IT because they had some horrible accident who aren’t really representin’, right? That’s what we are trying to prevent by wearing them!

  2. My kids must always wear helmets when they’re biking, scootering, or skating.

I’m just amazed at how many kids (and really young ones at that) ride around our neighborhood without helmets.

One parent actually told me, “I got tired of fighting with them about it.”

Hey, way to assert your parental authority!

  3. Whenever I see anyone – child, teen, adult alike – riding a bike without a helmet I always want to ask them, “Hey, where’s your helmet?” I mean who wouldn’t want to protect their head from serious injury?!

Oh and my teen simply won’t ride a bike anymore because of the helmet. That’s okay. She walks and rides the city bus instead.

  4. Yeah, always. It may mess his hair up, and it may not be cool, and they’re pricey, but it won’t mess his hair up as much as brain surgery, and they’re cooler and cheaper than brain surgery too.

Speaking of cooler, studies have shown that bikers’ core temperatures stay lower when they wear helmets. So much for the argument that it’s too hot to wear a helmet.
