We go through a lot of milk.? What’s a lot?? Try four gallons a week.? This week I went to the store to buy a gallon of milk.? Since it was the only item I bought, it stood out how much a gallon of milk actually costs.? $3.50.?? Usually, I get more stuff and don’t notice what the milk costs.
It’s not like my milk buying habits would change if I knew the price.? When Thing 3 wakes up in the morning, he is like a crack addict jonesing for his sippy cup of milk.? It usually takes two full cups to settle him down, then he’s good for a few hours until his next fix.
So I started doing the math.? Four gallons a week.? $3.50 a gallon.? That’s $14 a week.? 52 weeks a year.? Comes to $728 a year just for milk!
And they are in daycare all day during the week, where the milk is included.? What happens when they start elementary school and they’re home a few hours earlier…drinking milk?? I don’t want to even think about all the food they’ll be eating when they are teenagers.?? I hope there are some provisions for milk in the trillion dollar economic stimulus package.
And that’s not even Organic milk (which is what I drink myself.) That’s $6 a gallon! That’s $1,250 a year for your family! Which means you have to earn almost $1,600 of salary just to afford your Organic Milk habit. It’s incredible.
I love you Mom and Dad! Thank you for feeding me throughout the years!
My family was all about milk too. My wife isn’t huge on it, but I like to have a little around.
Now that we have a kid and looking at your estimates I am a bit worried since we only by organic/hormone free milk. . .
I’m lucky if a quart of milk gets used before it goes bad and the only way that happens is if I make something with milk in it. They just aren’t big milk drinkers. Lil’bug loves cheese, all kinds, so I’m not as concerned about calcium deficiency, there. Scout, though, I’m hoping his tastes change.
My mom would kill to have those types of numbers. My mother and I don’t even drink milk (and I don’t live at home anymore), but with a father, 3 brothers, and various neighborhood boys wandering through, my family goes through a gallon per DAY. My mom said she triese desperately to avoid doing the math on that one.
