I would side with 60-40% with a bias toward retirement.

And you can’t get low-rate loans and scholarships for retirement either.

I got loans and worked my way through a very expensive college with no parental help.
These days, I have a small 529 for my daughter but I’m expecting her to get loans and work too.
From my own experience, friends in college that didn’t pay for their own education ended up doing nothing with their degree. It’s different when you pay for it.

But I still wonder amount how much is the right amount? The kids can always borrow money for college. I?d rather they didn?t have all that debt, but at least the option is there for them. You can?t borrow for retirement.
